Should I Buy Truck Insurance Direct From Progressive or Through an Agent?

By Thomas Aronson, Founder & CEO, Aronson Group

Either can work. Progressive is the largest U.S. truck insurer and sells online, by phone and through more than 40,000 independent agents, and it says prices vary based on how you buy. Going direct gets you one carrier's price. An independent agent can compare Progressive with other carriers on the same limits.

Key numbers

  • #1: Progressive's rank among U.S. commercial truck insurers, based on S&P Global Market Intelligence 2025 written premium (Progressive)

  • 40,000+: independent agents and brokers who sell Progressive (ProgressiveAgent.com)

  • 23.5%: average savings across 113 placements with documented prior premiums in our proof library ($441,809 combined a year). Results vary, and not every policy can be beaten

How buying direct works

When you buy direct, you deal with Progressive itself, online or by phone. Progressive advertises online truck quotes in as little as 8 minutes (Progressive). You get one carrier's price and one carrier's coverage options. If you already know you want Progressive, going direct is simple.

The limit is that you only see one answer. If Progressive's underwriting doesn't like your radius, freight or driver history that year, you won't know what anyone else would have charged unless you start over somewhere else.

How an independent agent works

An independent agent is appointed with several carriers. You give your information once, and the agent submits it to the carriers that fit your operation, which can include Progressive. You compare the quotes side by side.

A good agent also handles the paperwork you'd otherwise chase yourself: certificates for brokers, adding and removing trucks, and making sure your insurer's filing with FMCSA is on record (FMCSA). Most agencies are paid a commission by the carrier that's built into the premium. Ask up front whether any separate broker fee applies.

What drives the price no matter where you buy

Your limits and coverages

The biggest reason two quotes look different is that they aren't quoting the same thing. $750,000 versus $1 million in liability, $100,000 versus $250,000 in cargo, a $1,000 versus $2,500 deductible. Line up the limits before you compare prices.

Your drivers, radius and freight

Driver age and MVR, years under your authority, how far you run, what you haul and where the truck is garaged set your rate at any carrier. None of that changes based on who you call.

How you buy

Progressive says it directly on its truck pages: prices vary based on how you buy (Progressive). That's why it's worth seeing more than one channel's number.

Only here: how to compare two truck insurance quotes line by line

Price is the last thing to compare, not the first. Before you decide, put the quotes side by side and check these, in this order:

  • Liability limit. $750,000 is the federal minimum for most for-hire freight. Many brokers want $1 million. A cheaper quote at the minimum can cost you loads.

  • Cargo limit and exclusions. Look for excluded commodities, unattended-vehicle exclusions and reefer breakdown coverage if you pull a reefer.

  • Physical damage values and deductibles. Is the truck insured at what it's actually worth? What do you pay out of pocket per claim?

  • Listed drivers and radius. A quote that assumes a shorter radius or leaves off a driver can change at audit or claim time.

  • Payment plan and fees. Down payment, monthly installment, and any policy or broker fees.

  • Who handles certificates and changes. You'll need certificates of insurance for every new broker. Find out how fast you'll get them.

If two quotes match on every line, then compare price. If they don't, the cheaper one usually just covers less.

When each option makes sense

Going direct can make sense if you've had Progressive for years, you're happy with the price and the service, and your operation hasn't changed.

An independent agent makes more sense if your renewal jumped, you're a new authority, you haul freight that some carriers avoid, or you've never compared. Across 664 small-fleet renewals with effective dates March 2025 to September 2026, the median renewal change was +7.8%, but 27% of premiums went down. You won't know which group you're in unless you shop. See what happens at renewal.

FAQ

Is Progressive good for commercial truck insurance?

Progressive is the largest U.S. commercial truck insurer by 2025 written premium, according to S&P Global data it cites, and it offers liability, cargo, physical damage and add-ons like trailer interchange. Whether it's the best price for you depends on your drivers, radius and freight. The only way to know is to compare it with other carriers on the same limits.

Is it cheaper to buy truck insurance direct?

Not necessarily. Progressive says its prices vary based on how you buy, whether online, by phone or through an agent. Sometimes direct is lower, sometimes an agent's quote is. An agent can also show you other carriers' prices on the same coverage, which buying direct from one company can't do.

Can an independent agent get me a Progressive quote?

Yes, if the agency is appointed with Progressive. Progressive says it works with more than 40,000 independent agents and brokers nationwide. Ask any agency which carriers it can quote for your operation, so you know whether Progressive is in the comparison or not.

Can I switch truck insurance in the middle of my policy?

Usually, yes. You can cancel and move to a new policy mid-term, but line up the new policy and its FMCSA filing before you cancel the old one, so you never have a gap. Ask your current insurer whether a cancellation fee or short-rate penalty applies before you switch.

Does using an insurance agent cost more?

In most cases the agent is paid a commission by the insurance company, built into the premium, so you don't write the agent a separate check. Some agencies add a broker or policy fee, so ask before you bind. Compare the total you'll pay, including fees, not just the premium.

How we got these numbers

Aronson Group figures come from 113 placements in our proof library with documented prior premiums and 664 small-fleet renewals with effective dates March 2025 to September 2026. A verified placement is a bound policy with a documented prior premium. Progressive figures come from Progressive's own pages linked above. Results vary with driver history, radius, commodity and garaging.
